That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can these things be?

For you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said truly.

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say, you, the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.
Woman, he said unto him, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews.
But the time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is Spirit, and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
The woman said: I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ);when he is come, he will tell us all things.
Jesus said, I am, I who speak to you.
And upon this came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with a woman. Yet no man said: What do you ask? or, Why are you talking with her?
So the woman left her water jar and went into the city and told people:
Come, see a man who told me everything I have done; be it the Christ?
They left the city, and they came to him.
Meanwhile, the disciples urged him to eat, saying, Rabbi, eat.
But he said: I have food to eat that you do not know.
The disciples therefore said to one another: someone have brought him food?
Jesus said to them, My meat is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
Do not you say that there are still four months until the harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.
For in this the saying is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.
I sent you to reap what you have not labored; others have labored, and ye are entered into their work.
Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of this formal declaration of women: He told me everything that I did.
So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them.He stayed there two days.
A much more believed because of his word;
They said to the woman: It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that it is indeed the Saviour of the world.
After two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee;
because he had declared himself a prophet has no honor in his own country.
When he arrived in Galilee, he was the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went to the feast.
It therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine.There was in Capernaum a nobleman, whose son was sick.
Having heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son, who was dying.
Jesus said, If you see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
The nobleman said to him: Sir, come down before my child dies.
Go, said Jesus, your son lives. And the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went away.
As he was going down, his servants coming at him, brought him, saying, Thy child lives.
He asked them what time he began to get better; and said to him: Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
The father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth. And himself believed, and his whole house.
Jesus did this second miracle when he was come from Judea to Galilee.
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate there is a pool that is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.
Under these lay a great multitude of sick, blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water;
For an angel went down from time to time in the pool, and troubled the water; and whosoever then first after the water had been agitated was healed, whatever his illness.
Here was a sick man for thirty-eight years.
Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had long ago told him, Wilt thou be made whole?
The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.
Arise, Jesus said to her, take up thy bed, and walk.
And immediately the man was made whole, took up his bed and walked.
It was a Sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed
He answered them, He who made me well said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
They asked him, Who is the man who said, Take up thy bed, and walk?
But he who was healed did not know who it was; for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place.
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art made whole: Sin no more, lest it happen to you something worse.
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
This is why the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the Sabbath.
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto; I, too, am working.
Because of this, the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
When Jesus spoke again, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, he does only what he sees the Father doing;and whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise.
For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does; and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he will.
The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.
And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of man.
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the graves shall hear his voice and come forth.
Those who have done good, unto the resurrection of life, those who have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.
I can do nothing of myself: as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
There is another that beareth witness of me, and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
For me it is not a man that I receive the testimony; but I say this so that you may be saved.
He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing to rejoice in his light.
I have greater witness than that of John; for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that is the Father who sent me.
And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness of me. You have never heard his voice, you have not seen;
and his word abiding in you, because you do not believe in the one he sent.
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
And you do not come to me for life!
I do not receive glory from men.
But I know that you have not in you the love of God.
I am come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him ye will receive.
How can ye believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only?
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.
For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me.
But if you do not believe his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
After this, Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, Tiberias.
A great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on the sick.
Jesus went up the mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
Now the Passover was near, the feast of the Jews.
Looked up, and saw a great crowd came to him, Jesus said to Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
Philip answered him, Loaves for two hundred denarii would not be enough for everyone to take a little.
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said:
There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are they among so many?
Jesus said, Make the men sit down. There was in this place a lot of grass.They sat down, in number about five thousand.
Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were seated; gave them even fish, much as they would.
When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the fragments that remained of the five barley loaves, that had eaten.
These people saw the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.
Jesus, knowing that they would come and take to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.
Being entered into a ship, and went over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come.
It a great wind blowing and the sea was rough.
Having rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and approaching the boat. And they were afraid.
But Jesus said unto them, It is I; do not be afraid!
They wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land whither they went.
The crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but they were gone only .
The next day, other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks,
people in the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
And when they found beyond the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when did you come here?
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and have been filled.
Do not work for food that spoils, but for that which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you; for it is he that the Father, God has set his seal.
They said to him: What must we do to do the works of God?
Jesus answered them, the work of God is that you believe in him whom he has sent.
What sign are you doing, they told him, that we may see, and we believe you? What are u up to?
Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven;
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
They said to him: Lord, give us this bread always.
Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
But I have told you, you have seen me, and believe not.
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not cast out anyone who comes to me;
For I came down from heaven, not to do my will but the will of him who sent me.
Now the will of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day.
The will of my Father is that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
The Jews then murmured at him, because he said: I am the bread that came down from heaven.
And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, which we know the father and mother? How can he now say, I came down from heaven?
Jesus answered them, Murmur not among yourselves.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God.Therefore everyone who hears the Father and has learned comes to me.
Not that anyone has seen the Father, save he which is of God; this one has seen the Father.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
I am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat and not die.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
Thereupon, Jews strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and if you drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
As the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven. It is not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth this bread will live forever.
These things he said in the synagogue, he taught in Capernaum.
Many of his disciples, when they heard, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?
Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them: Would you take offense?
And if you see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? …
It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who was who would betray him.
And he said, This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
So Jesus said to the twelve, Will you not also go away?
Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
And we have believed and have known that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus answered them, Is it not I chosen you twelve? And one of you is a devil?
He spoke of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son; for it was he who was to betray him, one of the twelve.
After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles was at hand.
And his brethren said to him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
Nobody is in secret, and he himself seeketh to be if you do these things, show thyself to the world.
For even his brothers did not believe in him.
Jesus said to them, My time is not yet come, but your time is always ready.
The world can not hate you; me, he hates me because I bear witness concerning it that its works are evil.
You go up to this feast; for me, I go up; because my time is not yet accomplished.
After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
When his brothers had gone to the festival, he also went up himself, not openly, but in secret.
The Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
There was much murmuring among the people concerning. Some said, This is a good man. Others said, No, he is misleading the multitude.
No one, however, no one spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.
By the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple. And taught.
And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
Jesus answered them, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
If someone wants to do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and there is injustice in him.
Moses did he not given you the law? And none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?
The crowd answered, Thou hast a devil. Who is it that seeks to kill you?
Jesus answered them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
Moses gave you circumcision, not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs-and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why you irritate you against me because I made a whole man on the Sabbath?
Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Some inhabitants of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
And, behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him! Is really the rulers know that he is the Christ?
But this one, we know where it is; but Christ when he comes, no one will know where he is.
And Jesus taught in the temple, cried, You know me, and you know where I am! I came not of myself: but he that sent me is true, and you do not know.
I know; for I am from him and he sent me.
Then they sought to take him: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Many of the people believed in him, and they said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than has done this?
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning him.Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.
Jesus said, I am with you for a little while, and then I am going to him who sent me.
You will seek me and you will not find me, you can not come where I am.
The Jews therefore said among themselves, Where will he go, that we do not find him? Will he among those who are scattered among the Greeks, and will teach the Greeks?
What is this word that he said, Ye seek me and you will not find me, you can not come where I am?
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, If any man thirst, let him come to Me and drink.
Whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow from within, as the Scripture says.
He says this about the Spirit that they should receive who believed in him; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
People in the crowd heard these words, said, This is the Prophet.
Others said, This is the Christ. And others said: Is this from Galilee the Christ come?
Scripture does it not say that it is the offspring of David, and the village of Bethlehem, where David was, that Christ should come?
So there was, because of him, division among the people.
Some of them wanted to take him: but no man laid hands on him.
Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees. And they said unto them, Why have you not brought him?
The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
The Pharisees answered them: Are you, too, have been deceived?
Will it any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?
But this people who do not know the law is accursed!
Nicodemus, who came to Jesus by night, and who was one of them said:
Does our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he did?
And they said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Consider, and see that from Galilee no prophet arises out.
And every man went to his house.
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them.
And the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery;
and placing it among the people, they said unto him, Master, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such women: Now what do you say?
They said this to test him, to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
As they continued asking him, he straightened up and said: Let him who is without sin cast the first stone against it.
And stooping down again, he wrote on the ground.
When they heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest to the last; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing in the middle.
Then lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, Jesus said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? No he condemned you?
She said, No, Lord. And Jesus said, I do not condemn you: go, and sin no more.
Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Thereupon the Pharisees said to him, You testify about yourself; thy record is not true.
Jesus answered them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came and whither I go; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
You judge after the flesh; I judge no one.
And if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone; but the Father who sent me is with me.
It is written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true;
I bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father.
These words spake Jesus, teaching in the temple, the place where the treasure was; and no one seized him, because his hour was not yet come.
Jesus said to them, I am going, and you will seek me and you will die in your sins; you can not come where I am going.
The Jews therefore said: Will he kill he himself, since he says you can not come where I am going?
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
This is why I told you that you will die in your sins; because if you do not believe what I am, you will die in your sins.
Who are you? they told him. Jesus answered: What I tell you from the beginning.
I have many things to say and to judge you; but he who sent me is true, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.
They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but that I speak just what the Father taught me.
He who sent me is with me; He has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.
As he spoke, many believed in him.
And he said to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, you are truly my disciples;
you know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
They answered him, We are Abraham’s seed, and have never been in bondage; how do you say, You will become free?
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Jesus answered them, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
And the servant abideth not in the house; the son remains forever.
So if the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed.
I know you are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
I say what I have seen with my Father; and you, you do what you have heard from your father.
They answered him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
But now ye seek to kill me, I who told you the truth that I heard from God. This, Abraham hath not done.
Ye do the deeds of your father. They said: We are not born of fornication;we have one Father, God.
Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love me, for it is God that I came out and have come; I have not come of myself, but he sent me.
Why do you not understand my speech? Because you can not hear my word.
You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar and the father of it.
And I, because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do not you believe me?
He who is of God hears God’s words; you do not listen, because you are not of God.
The Jews answered him: Do not we right in saying that you are a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
I seek not my glory; there is one who seeks and judges.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
Now the Jews said to him, we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and you say, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died.Who do you claim to be?
Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It was my father who glorifies me, you say is your God
and you do not know. For me, I know; and if I said I did not know I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word.
Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it and was glad.
The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Thereupon they took up stones to throw against him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
Jesus saw in passing a man blind from birth.
His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered: It is not that he or his parents sinned; but that the works of God might be displayed in him.
I need to do, while it is day, the works of him that sent me; the night cometh, when no man can work.
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
Having said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva.Then he applied the mud on the man’s eyes,
and said, Go and wash yourself in the pool of Siloam (which means Sent.)He went and washed, and came seeing clear.
His neighbors and those who before had seen a beggar, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
Some said, This is it. Others said: No, but he is like him. And he himself said: I am.
Then said they unto him, How were your eyes opened?
He replied, The Man called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ I went, I washed, and I received sight.
They said to him: Where is he? He replied: I do not know.
They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.

Once again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.And he said unto them, He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.
What some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How can a sinner do such signs?
And there was a division among them. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he opened your eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents.
And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?
His parents answered, We know that this is our son, and he was born blind;
but how he now sees, or who opened his eyes, that’s what we know. Ask him yourself, he is of age, he will talk about what concerns him.
His parents said this because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he would be out of the synagogue.
Therefore said his parents, He is of age, ask himself.
The Pharisees again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.
He replied: If he is a sinner, I know not; one thing I know is that I was blind, now I see.
They said to him: What did he do? How opened he thine eyes?
He replied: I have said, and you did not listen; why would you hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples?
They insulted him and said, Thou art his disciple; us, we are disciples of Moses.
We know that God spoke to Moses; but this one, we know not from where he is.
The man answered: It is amazing that you know where he is; and yet he opened my eyes.
We know that God heareth not sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper and does his will, him he heareth.
Never has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.
If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.
They answered him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and you teach us? They threw him out.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and, having met him, he said: Do you believe in the Son of God?
He answered and who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?
You saw him, he said to him, and he who speaks to you, it’s him.
And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him.
Jesus said: I am come into this world for judgment, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.
Some Pharisees who were with him heard these words, said to him: We, too, are we blind?
Jesus answered them, If you were blind, you would have no sin. But now you say, We see. That is why your sin remains.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way, is a thief and a robber.
But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
Him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; he calls by name the sheep that belong to him, and he leads them out.
When he brings out his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
They follow a stranger; but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
Jesus told them this parable, but they did not understand what he was talking to them.
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
All who came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
I am the door. Whoever enters through me will be saved; shall go in and out, and find pasture.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I am come that they might have life, and have it in abundance.
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
But the hireling, who is not the shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep developed. I am the good shepherd.
I know my own and my own know me,
as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I give my life for my sheep.
And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; these, I must bring, andthey shall hear my voice; and there shall be one flock, one shepherd.
The Father loves me, because I lay down my life, to take it again.
No one takes away from me, but I lay it down of myself; I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again: this is the order I received from my Father.
There was again because of these words division among Jews.
Several of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why do you listen to?
Others said, These are not the words of a demon; Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?
Jerusalem the feast of the Dedication. It was winter.
And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.
Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.
Jesus answered them, I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify of me.
But you do not believe because you are not of my sheep.
My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
I and the Father are one.
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
Jesus said: I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which you stone me?
The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, make yourself God.
Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture can not be broken;
whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, you say: You blaspheme And that because I said, I am the Son of God.
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and understand that the Father is in me and I in the Father.
Thereupon they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hands.
Jesus went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized. And remained there.
Many people came to him and said, John did no miracle; but everything John said about this man was true.
And in that place many believed in him.
There was a sick man, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
It was that Mary who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair, and it was her brother Lazarus was sick.
The sisters sent word to Jesus, Lord, behold, he whom you love is ill.
After hearing this, Jesus said, This sickness is not unto death; but it is for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
When therefore he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was,
and then he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judea.
The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews of late sought to stone you, and are you going there again?
Jesus answered, Are has there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world;
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.
After this, he said to them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I’ll wake him.
The disciples said to him, Lord, if he sleeps, he will recover.
Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought he meant natural sleep.
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
And because of you, that you may believe, I am glad I was not there. But come to him.
What Thomas called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been four days in the tomb.
Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs,
many Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him, while Mary stayed at home.
Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.
Jesus said to her, Thy brother shall rise again.
I know Martha said to him, he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?
She told him: Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
Having said this, she went away. Then she secretly called Mary her sister, saying, The Master is here, and he asks you.
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and went to him.
Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha had met him.
The Jews who were with her in the house, and comforted her, having to get up quickly and went out, followed her, saying she was going to the tomb to weep there.
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, and said, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
And said, Where have you laid him? Lord, they replied, come and see.
The Jews, Behold how he loved her.
And some of them said: He who has opened the eyes of the blind, could not it also be that this man from dying?
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to him: Lord, he already feels, because there are four days it’s there.
Jesus said to him, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?
So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
For me, I knew that you always hear me; but I spoke because of the people standing here, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
Having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!
And the dead came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
Many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.
But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What shall we do? For this man doeth many miracles.
If we let him, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.
One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing;
Nor consider that it is in you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
But he did not say this of himself; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.
And it was not for the nation only, it was also to gather into one the dispersed children of God.
From that day, they resolved to kill him.
This is why Jesus did more openly among the Jews; but he retired to the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, He stayed there with his disciples.
The Passover of the Jews was near. And many people in the country went up to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.
They were looking for Jesus, and said to each other in the temple, What think ye? Does not it come to the party?
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead.
There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those who were at table with him.
Mary took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
One of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, said:
Why did not we sold the three perfume hundred pence, and given to the poor?
This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the bag, and bare what was put therein.
But Jesus said, Let her keep it against the day of my burial.
You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.
Much people of the Jews learned that Jesus was in Bethany; and they came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
The chief priests took counsel to kill Lazarus too,
because many of the Jews went away from them because of him, and believed on Jesus.
The next day much people that were come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting Hosanna!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written:
Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.
His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him.
All those who were with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and rose from the dead, bare record;
and the crowd came to meet him, because they heard he had done this miracle.
The Pharisees therefore said to each other: You see you do not win;behold, the world has gone after him.
Some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast:
came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
Philip went and told Andrew, and Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
Jesus said: The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Verily, verily, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
He who loves his life will lose it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor.
Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? … Father, save me from this hour? … But that’s why I came to this hour.
Father, glorify your name! And a voice came from heaven: I have glorified it and will glorify it again.
The crowd that was there and heard it, said that it thundered. Others said, An angel spoke to him.
Jesus said, It is not for my sake that this voice is heard; it is because of you.
Now is the judgment of this world; now the prince of this world be cast out.
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.
As he spoke, he said, signifying what death he should die. –

The crowd answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever; and how sayest thou then, must the Son of man be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?
Jesus said to them: The light just a little time in you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
While you have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. Jesus said these things, then he went and hid himself from them.
Despite so many miracles he had made in their presence, they did not believe in him,
This was to fulfill the word that Isaiah the prophet spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord he been revealed?
Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
He has blinded their eyes; and he hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they be put out of the synagogue.
For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
But Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me;
and he who sees me sees him who sent me.
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, it is not I judge him;for I came not to judge the world but to save the world.
He who rejects me, and receiveth not my words, hath one judge; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father who sent me commanded me himself that I have to say and advertise.
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting. This is why the things I say, I say as the Father has told me.
Before the feast of Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, put the finishing touch to his love for them.
During supper, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
Jesus knew that the Father had given all things into his hands, he had come from God, and went to God,
rose from the table, took off his clothes and took a towel, and girded himself.
Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
He came to Simon Peter; and Peter said, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
Jesus answered him, What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter.
Peter said, No, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and head.
Jesus said, He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is clean;and you are clean, but not all.
For he knew who should betray him; so he said: You are not all clean.
After he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, and said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
You call me Teacher and Lord; and you say well, for so I am.
So if I have washed your feet, I the Lord and Master, you must also wash your feet with each other;
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
This is not all of you I speak; I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
Now I tell you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe that I am.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.
Having said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and he specifically said, Verily, verily, I say to you, one of you will betray me.
The disciples looked at one another, doubting of whom he spoke.
One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining on Jesus’ breast.
Simon Peter motioned to him to ask who was whom he spoke.
And this disciple, then lying on Jesus’ breast, said to him: Lord, who is it?
Jesus answered, It is he to whom I shall give tempered piece. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
As soon as the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him
For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus said to him: Buy what we need for the feast, or that he should give something to the poor.
He then having received the sop went immediately out. It was night.
When he was gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him.
My little children, I am for a little while longer with you. You will seek me;and as I said to the Jews, you can not come where I am going, I say to you also now.
I give you a new commandment, that you love one another; as I have loved you, too, love each other.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus said: You can not follow me now where I am going, but you will follow later.
Lord told Peter, why can not I follow you now? I will give my life for you.
Jesus answered, you lay down your life for me? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.
There are many mansions in the house of my Father. If this were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And when I go in, and I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am you may be also.
You know where I’m going, and you know the way.
Thomas said to him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how can we know the way?
Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you knew me, you would know my Father. And from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Philip said, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Jesus said He was so long that I am with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself; and the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Believe me, I am in the Father and the Father is in me; else believe because of the works themselves.
Verily, verily, I say to you, he who believes in me will do the works that I do, and he will do even greater, because I am going to the Father;
and whatever you ask in my name, I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything in my name, I will.
If you love me, keep my commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you
the Spirit of truth, whom the world can not receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is that loveth me:and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, I will love, and I will manifest myself to him.
Judas not Iscariot, said to him: Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not to the world?
Jesus answered him, If anyone loves me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love We will come to him and make our home with him.
He who does not love me does not keep my words. And the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father who sent me.
I have told you these things while I am still with you.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
I leave you peace, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
You have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I am.
And now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.
I will not talk much with you; because the prince of this world cometh. It has nothing in me;
But that the world may know that I love the Father and that I act according to the order that the Father gave me, Arise, let us go hence.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
Every branch in me that bears no fruit, He takes away; and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken unto you.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch can not itself bear fruit unless it abides in the vine, so neither can, unless you abide in me.
I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him, bears much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered;and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be yours.
If you bear much fruit, it is my Father glorified, that ye be my disciples.
As the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
I told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full.
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
There is no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father.
It is not you who chose me; but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and you bear fruit and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give you.
I command you, that ye love one another.
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before you.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
But they will do all these things because of my name, because they know not him that sent me.
If I had not come and that I spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
He who hates me hates my Father.
If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
But this happened was to fulfill the word that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
When the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he shall testify of me;
and ye also shall bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
I told you these things, so they are not for you offended.
They will put you out of the synagogues; yea, the time cometh, that whosoever kills you will think to worship God.
And they will do because they have not known the Father, nor me.
I told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. I have not told you from the beginning, because I was with you.
Now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you?
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send.
And when he comes, he will convict the world in respect of sin, righteousness, and of judgment:
in regard to sin, because they believe not on me;
righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
I have yet many things to say to you but you can not bear them now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you into all truth; for he shall not speak of himself, he will speak only what he hears, and he will shew you things to come.
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
All that the Father has is mine; that’s why I said it takes what is mine and declare it to you.
Yet a little while, and you will not see me; and again a little while you will see me, because I am going to the Father.
Whereupon some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us a little time, and you will not see me; and again a little while, and you will see me? and, Because I go to the Father?
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We do not know of what he speaks.
Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, said: Are you wondering each other about what I said, A little while, and ye see me no more; and again a little while you will see me.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, weep and you will lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
When a woman gives birth, has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that she has a man is born into the world.
So, too, are now in sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy.
In that day you will ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father, he will give it you in my name.
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.
I told you these things in parables. The time is coming when I will speak to you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will pray the Father for you;
for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
I came from the Father, and am come into the world; Now I leave the world and go to the Father.
His disciples said unto him, Behold, now you speak openly, and you no proverb.
Now we know that thou knowest all things, and that you do not need anyone to question you; that is why we believe that you came from God.
Jesus answered them, Do you now believe.
Behold, the hour cometh, and now is, when you will be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; but I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I told you these things, so that you have peace in me. You have tribulation in the world; But take heart! I have overcome the world.
Having said this, he looked up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come! Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you,
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
And this is eternal life, that they might know thee the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work you gave me to do.
And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
I have manifested thy name to the men whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me; and they have kept thy word.
Now they know that everything you gave me comes from you.
For I have given them the words which you gave me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
It is for them that I pray. I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me, for they are thine; –
and all that is mine is yours and what’s yours is mine; and I am glorified in them.
I am no more in the world, and they are in the world, and I come to thee.Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one as we are.
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name. I kept those you have given me, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled.
And now I come to thee, and these things I speak in the world, so they have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
I pray not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from evil.
They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
I sanctify myself for them, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
It is not for them only do I pray, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
that all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one –
I in them and thou in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Father, I will that where I am, whom thou hast given me, be with me, that they may see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world .
Righteous Father, the world hath not known; but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
I made known to them your name, and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.
When he had said this, Jesus went with his disciples across the Kidron valley, where a garden was, into which he entered, he and his followers.
Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place because Jesus and his disciples often met there.
Judas then, having received the cohort, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Jesus, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said, I am. And Judas, who betrayed him, stood with them.
When he said to them: It’s me, they drew back and fell to the ground.
He asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus answered, I told you it’s me. If therefore ye seek me, let these go.
He said this was to fulfill the word which he had spoken, I have not lost any of those you have given me.
Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
Jesus said to Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath. Do I not drink the cup the Father has given me to drink?
Cohort, the tribune, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him.
They led him away to Annas first; for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard;
But Peter stood at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the door, and brought in Peter.
The maid kept the door said to Peter, Thou also wast thou not disciples of this man? He said: I am not.
The servants and officers, who were there, had lit a fire because it was cold, and warmed themselves. Peter stood with them, and warming himself.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and I have said nothing in secret.
Why do you ask me? Asks what I told them who heard me; behold, these know what I said.
At these words, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus, saying, Is this the way you answer the high priest?
Jesus said, If I have spoken evil, bear what I said wrong; and if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?
Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. It is said: Thou also wast thou not of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, said, Do you not I see you with him in the garden?
Peter then denied again. And immediately the cock crew.
They led Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early.They did not enter themselves in court, in order not to be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, What accusation do you bring against this man?
They answered him, If it were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered to you.
Pilate therefore said to them, Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law. The Jews said to him: It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.
It was so fulfill the word which Jesus had said, signifying what death he should die.
Pilate entered into the judgment hall, called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the King of the Jews?
Jesus answered: Is it yourself that you say that, or the other you they told me?
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
My kingdom is not of this world, Jesus said. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not of this world.
Pilate said to him: Art thou a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. I was born and I came into the world to bear witness to the truth.Everyone who is of the truth heareth my voice.
Pilate said to him: What is truth? Having said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said to them: I find no fault in him.
But, as you have a custom that I release unto you one at the passover: will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
Then again all cried, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.
And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns they put it upon his head, and dressed him in a purple robe; then, approaching him,
they said: Hi, King of the Jews! And they gave him blows.
Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that you may know that I find no fault in him.
Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them: Behold the Man.
When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried Crucify!Crucify! Pilate said unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him; for I find no fault in him.
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was more afraid.
He returned to the courtroom, and said to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
Pilate said to him: Is it me you do not speak? Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee?
Jesus answered, You would have no power over me if it had been given you from above. Therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
From this time Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried: If you release, you are no friend of Caesar. Whoever makes himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and he sat on the court at a place called the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha.
It was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour. Pilate said to the Jews, Behold your king.
But they cried out, removes, crucify him! Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Then he delivered him to be crucified. They took Jesus, and led him away.
He bearing his cross, to the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.
It was there they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side and Jesus in the midst.
Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross, and the writing was: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
Many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin.
The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Write not, King of the Jews.But that he said, I am King of the Jews.
Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
The soldiers had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout. And they said among themselves:
Not rend it, but cast lots to whom it will be. This took place to fulfill the words of Scripture: They divided my garments, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did.
Near the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold thy son.
Then he said to the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his.
After this, Jesus knowing that all was now finished, said, that the scripture might be fulfilled, I thirst.
There was a vessel full of vinegar. The soldiers put a sponge, and, having secured a hyssop, they put it up to his mouth.
When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished. And he bowed his head, he gave up his spirit.
In fear that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, for it was the preparation, that sabbath day was an high day, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs should break the crucified and that one taken away.
Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and the other which was crucified with him.
When they came to Jesus, and saw dead already, they brake not his legs:
but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water.
One who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true; and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
These things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled, A bone of him shall be broken.
And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave him. So he came and took the body of Jesus.
Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a mixture of about a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes.
They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein was never man yet laid.
It was there they laid Jesus, because of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near.
The first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark; and seeth the stone taken away from the tomb.
She ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away from the sepulcher the Lord, and we know not where they have laid him.
Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the sepulcher.
They both ran together. But the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first;
stooped down, he saw the linen cloths lying, yet he did not enter.
Simon Peter following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying;
and linen that had been placed on his head, not lying with the strips, but rolled up in a place by itself.
Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in;and he saw, and believed.
Because they do not understand that, according to Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
And the disciples went back home.
But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she stooped and looked into the sepulcher,
and she saw two angels in white sitting on the spot where the body had been lying for Jesus, the one at the head, the other at the feet.
They said to her, Woman, why are you crying? She said to them: Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
In saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing; but she did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?She, thinking it was the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take.
Jesus said Mary! She turned and said to him, Rabboni; that is to say, Master!
Jesus said to her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father.But go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and he had said these things.
The evening of that day, which was the first of the week, the doors of the place where the disciples were closed, because of their fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them, and said: Peace be with you!
And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, so I send you.
After this, he breathed on them and said to them: Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; and those whom ye retain, they are retained.
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and if I put my hand into his side, I will not believe.
Eight days later, his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in their midst and said, Peace be with you!
Then he said to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands;and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing.
Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said,
Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed. Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed!
Jesus did in the presence of his disciples, many other miracles which are not written in this book.
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the edge of the sea of Tiberias. And here is how it appeared.
Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the son of Zebedee, and two other disciples of Jesus were together.
Simon Peter said to them, I go a fishing. They said to him, We also go with thee. They went out and got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.
The morning was come, Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
Jesus saith unto them, Children, have you anything to eat? They answered him, No.
He said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find. They cast therefore, and they could not remove it, because of the large amount of fish.
So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord! Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, he put his clothes and belt, for he was naked, and threw himself into the sea.
The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits.
When they landed, they saw a fire of coals, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
Jesus said to them, Bring of the fish you just caught.
Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of hundred fifty-three large fish; and though there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus said to them: Come and dine. And none of the disciples dared ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them; he did the same fish.
This was already the third time that Jesus was revealed to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
When they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than they like me? He replied: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs.
He said to him a second time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?Peter answered him, Yes, Lord, you know I love you. Jesus said to him: Feed my sheep.
He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time: Do you love me? And he answered him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.Jesus said to him: Feed my sheep.
Verily, verily, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
He said this signifying by what death he should glorify God. And having said this, he said to him, Follow me.
Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved, the one who at the supper leaned on Jesus’ breast, and said, Lord, who is thy book?
Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus: And this one, Lord, what will happen to him?
Jesus said to him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to you?You, Me.
With that, a rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he should not see death; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to you?
This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them.And we know that his testimony is true.
Jesus did many other things; if they were written in detail, I do not think that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
Let us pray that the Holy Spirit of God guides us in this final stage of the End Times.
